horse-led learning
how it works...
Horses are prey animals, who, in their natural environment live in herds. As a result, they are highly sensitive to the behaviour and intention of herd members and other animals, including human beings. Horses react and respond to their environment and other animals in the moment, and so their communication through body language is always authentic. Horses reflect and respond honestly to the client's behaviour, and in this way act as a mirror and allow the client to learn about themselves.
Horse-led learning is based on relationship and connection. Spending time with these intelligent and sensitive creatures can increase the capacity for self-awareness and empathy - empathy for ourselves as well as others. At the heart of this therapeutic learning is the concept that interacting with horses can positively and permanently change lives.
The sessions are unique, designed to fit individual needs and requirements. The practical work with the horses varies but each activity is specifically designed, and all activities are ground based. The focus is on the interaction between the client and horse within a natural, supportive and nurturing environment. The role of the facilitator is to observe and gently guide, offering the client time to process what is happening.
The work that is undertaken in these sessions is not exclusive and can complement any other form of therapeutic intervention. Horse-led learning also stands alone as a robust therapeutic programme, positively influencing social, emotional and cognitive development.
Clients can take part in the sessions throughout any stage of personal development.
